In the 1980s, DJ Grand Wizard Theodore accidentally invented the act of scratching and the needle drop, pushing not only rap to a new level but also the physical act of DJing. Another reason is the popularity of “pure” in this culture. One of the big reasons is the famous pull from the south, which can affect the clarity of pronunciation of the lyrics. There are numerous internet guides for doing this, "Google" is your friend. A small tweak in Windows settings will "fix" the drive letter for the device in question. If your Media Library uses removable media to store files the assigned drive letter changes can be a real pain. Experience shows that UNC paths (if available) give better results, drive mappings can easily be broken or changed, and not using them removes an unnecessary step in generating the file or folder path. Both drive letters and UNC paths are supported.įor example, a mapped drive on a NAS device can be accessed as m:\ or Īs-1\media in Windows). TV Rename uses the underlying Windows infrastructure to manipulate files, so if you can see a path or file in Windows TV Rename can see it as well. TV Rename doesn’t care how these folders are organised, however to us mere humans probably “one folder per show” or “one folder per show with one sub-folder per season” would make sense in terms of being able to (manually) find stuff later if you really need to. The guide assumes you already have the beginnings of a Media Library - a folder (or folders) somewhere on your PC or NAS or whatever, with a bunch of tv show files in it (them). Luckily these have sensible defaults and its actually relatively easy to get up and running providing you don’t get distracted by the settings. Make this your final Led Zeppelin purchase. However, it’s only meant for people who already own and love all Zeppelin’s other albums. I found Coda to be an altogether fun release. However, this album isn’t as bad as its reputation would have us believe. But what were we expecting? Masterpieces? This is an outtakes album, for cripes sake! What’s more, they had already used up the best of their pre-1975 outtakes for Physical Graffiti. It’s the most scattershot and sloppy collection of songs this band ever released. They even treated us to some Jerry Lee Lewis style piano in there, which certainly doesn’t hurts!ĭespite my opening paragraph, Coda is by and large the worst Led Zeppelin album. Shouldn’t we be immediately suspect of anything that was left off of that album? Normally yes, but I actually like the other outtake, “Darlene.” It’s a stiff boogie-woogie, but the detached riff is kind of catchy, and the loud drumming makes it seem epic. Things were going great until the closing track, “Wearing and Tearing,” an overlong and sloppy song that was left off of In Through the Out Door. I can’t say I’m greatly awestruck listening to it-it’s just a drum solo after all-but it’s one of the few drum solos out there, I’m aware of, that makes me want to tap my foot. It sounds as though Bonham were playing it on a mountaintop, and Zeus was his audience. This drum solo, on the other hand, is rhythmic and huge. When I think of drum solos, I usually think of flashy and pitter-pattery things that are sometimes fun at first, but they pretty quickly start to bore me. It isn’t bad for what amounts to a two-chord song! What keeps it afloat, amazingly enough, is Bonham’s tight drumming.Īlso amazingly, Coda contains a four-minute drum solo, “Bonzo’s Montreux,” that I don’t find boring. “Poor Tom” is a folkish rocker that was left off of Led Zeppelin III. I find it to be a little bit sloppy and I’m not a huge fan of Page’s improvised and selfish licks throughout, but I can’t deny that I get a little something pumping through my veins when I listen to it. So where can it go wrong? Frankly, I wonder why this song isn’t more beloved by their fans.Ī live version of “I Can’t Quit You Baby” is also included, and it’s certainly another one that the die-hard fans will lap up greedily. King song, but it sounds exactly like a classic old Led Zeppelin song. Everything is in its place Plant squawks like a rock star, Page’s guitar licks are tight and exciting, Jones’ bass is infectious and danceable, and Bonham’s drumming is tight. As you might imagine, that was when the band was at the peak of their live playing abilities, and it shows. The opening track, “We’re Gonna Groove,” kicks ass! It was recorded live way back in 1969. If nothing else, it proved that there was a sizable audience for this stuff.Īnd the kids of the early ’80s had a good reason to be interested to hear these songs. That’s a really damn good reason for him to have released this. Some people saw this gesture as a cheap cash-in, but according to Page, it was a response to these songs being rampantly bootlegged at the time. So I guess that gave Jimmy Page reason enough to go through the vaults to pick out some unused songs to remix and release. Who knows?Īnyway, Bonham died in 1980, and I guess that meant there was no chance of Led Zeppelin continuing to release albums under that moniker. Perhaps I approached their earlier albums feeling that Led Zeppelin were a little too self-aware that they were immortal rock ‘n’ roll gods. How can a straight-thinking person think such things? Maybe it’s the pure imperfection of this I like. The fact that I can listen to a much maligned outtakes album like Coda and enjoy it more than Presence has such connotations. I’ve been long suspect that I’ve been a dummy my entire life. The Animating Democracy Initiative (ADI) was the outgrowth of that study. In 1996 the Ford Foundation funded Americans for the Arts to study current activity and best practices among artists and cultural organizations whose work engages the public in dialogue on key civic issues. Dialogue, which has a long history among artists and cultural institutions, has also become an increasingly important concept in the arts community. They are also aware that how we talk is important-dialogue must address issues of equity before it can be successful. Many forward thinking citizens of the world now realize that in order to create just and humane societies, all kinds of individuals and groups need to come together to talk about the important and controversial matters that affect their survival and progress. T While debate and controversy have been the norms, an increasingly diverse and conflicted world calls us to collaborate with one another in order to survive and share the planet as one humanity. Dialogue has become the rallying cry of our day, and we see it taking place around the world: in the community dialogues sponsored by the Study Circles Resource Center, in the development of theory and practice at MIT's Dialogue Project, in the Seeds of Peace activities between Arab and Israeli youth, and in the open dialogues of family therapists in Finland. Over the last twenty years, the focus of numerous scholars and practitioners has turned to the topic of dialogue. I have to answer with my life for what I have experienced and understood in art, so that everything I have experienced and understood would not remain ineffectual in my life. However, in the midst of writing this post, I discovered that OneDrive will treat Cryptomator encrypted files as a false positive for ransomware. In the original first draft of this blog post, I was planning to move to OneDrive using Cryptomator. Finally, Nextcloud provides an entire cloud ecosystem that I honestly don’t need at all. In addition, Nextcloud has been clunky and slow and their web/iOS apps leave a lot to be desired, which I won’t go into here. I’ve also had random issues with sync conflicts and the servers randomly going down. NextCloud (paid through Cloudamo) - Pricey at ~$4/mo for 100 GB.Like Syncthing, I also don’t like not having a ‘pseudo-backup’ in the cloud via sync when hosting at home. NextCloud (Self-Hosted) - Worked decently when I tried it, but I don’t have a machine to dedicate to it, nor do I want to deal with uptime.MEGA - Requires trusting their client-side encryption and kind of pricey for my use case (~$5.90/mo for 400 GB storage).Microsoft Drive - Also cheap, but I’ve had pretty poor experiences with their client on MacOS with my work laptop.Google Drive - Cheap ($1.99/mo for 100 GB), but since I use my Google account for things like music collaboration and YouTube, I don’t want all my eggs in one basket in case my account is either randomly compromised or closed. However, I still have this account for collaboration Dropbox - As mentioned above, it’s way too expensive.Syncthing - Works great, but I like having the cloud as a ‘pseudo-backup’ for my files. That said, here’s a list of such cloud storage and/or sync clients I’ve tried: For example, Dropbox currently charges $11.99/mo with 2 TB as their lowest tier personal plan, which is more than I need for cloud storage. However most providers don’t offer plans with this low of storage. My storage needs aren’t too high, hovering around 20-25 GB of true storage needs. It also acts as a pseudo-backup (I use Backblaze and local drives for true backups with snapshots) in case I can’t access files on one of my machines. For context, I use cloud storage primarily for easy immediate access of important documents/files. Over the past year, I’ve been bouncing between several different cloud storage services and/or sync clients, each with their own trade-offs between convenience, privacy, and pricing. Personally, if I can’t be a sea captain, or a stucco mason, I know the career I’m going to choose. If your lifelong dream is to be a stucco mason, I’m certainly not going to burst your balloon. Whether enough people in these over-crowded professions will jump ship, and then jump on a ship, is difficult for me to predict. Sad to say, the job market of the future will not be kind to “food preparation workers, cashiers, telemarketers, plasters and stucco masons, waiters, actors, cooks, credit analysts and cabinet makers.” We just have too many of these people, which depresses salaries, which depresses me. If the Conference Board and I have failed to present you with future career opportunities where projected shortages will get you megabucks, allow us to share with you the career choices that are likely to keep you mega-poor. Really! Remember your childhood dream of being able to shush people with impunity? Well, now’s the time to get yourself to library school, because the librarians we already have are rushing to retirement, and the hot new superstar librarians coming up can not possibly provide all the shushing we are going to need. I know you’ve never passed a pool of wastewater, or, for that matter, passed out in a pool of wastewater, without saying to yourself, “By George, I could treat that.” And you didn’t know even know there were beaucoup bucks involved.ĭo the glamorous worlds of power plant management and wastewater treatment seem like a lot more excitement than you could handle? There are some low-key jobs that are also showing great growth potential. Though it is difficult to believe, the Conference Board’s researchers have found that young people are spurning this profession. Wastewater treatment is another area primed for future growth. If it has something to do with teaching people how to goof off at their jobs, and not only get away with it, but thoroughly believe that they deserve major raises for all they don’t do, occupational therapy could be right up your alley. This should give you time to figure out what the heck an occupational therapist does. Occupational therapist is another career that is expected to be plagued by shortages in the coming years. 01 percent of the time when things go, shall we say, nuclear, you might find yourself the subject of a rather negative focus in the press, but what the heck – you’ll be glowing so brightly you can easily get yourself a job as a floor lamp. I think you would be especially good at operating a nuclear power plant, which is a really cushy job 99.99 percent of the time. Power plant operators are projected to be short supply, and that seems like a terrific job – if you have to stay on land. Of course, if you get seasick watching “Baywatch” reruns, or don’t look good in a uniform, or simply don’t want to go down with the ship, there are other careers that are the upswing. Or, maybe, with global warming making ocean levels rise, we’ll just need more sea captains to run the new commuter boats that will be transporting passengers from under-water Manhattan to under-water Miami. Maybe the all the Harvard and Stanford graduates who would normally become sea captains have decided to become investment bankers, instead. I’m not sure why sea captains turn up on high on the most-wanted list. According to a recent Lauren Weber article in “The Wall Street Journal,” the Conference Board, a corporate-research organization, has “examined the risk of labor shortages in 464 occupations, projecting shortfalls for a majority of them.” |
